Any diagnosis only brings results when there are specialists who can correctly explain the data obtained. Otherwise, it may lead to unnecessary repairs or to skipping the problem. You can look for a problem where it does not exist. Consider one such example when the analysis of the oil was incorrectly interpreted: a sample was taken from a gas engine and its elemental analysis was performed. As a result, increased values of copper and lead were obtained. And using only this data, the staff decided to dismantle the engine in order to check some parts and bearings. And this check showed that the engine has no abnormal wear. Of course, the user was disappointed in the analysis of oil as a method for diagnosing equipment problems. However, there is a misinterpretation of the data, a lack of an integrated approach to the results of oil analysis and a complete misunderstanding of tribology.
The user knew that the presence of copper and lead in the oil analysis report indicated bearing wear. However, to draw a similar conclusion on one oil sample is not entirely correct. Before starting to diagnose the engine for oil analysis and data interpretation, and even more so to disassemble it, you should pay attention to several questions:
- The current level of copper and lead,
- Their levels in the previous analysis,
- When did the oil change for the last time,
- Is there an increase in the rate of change in the concentration of these metals since the previous analysis,
- What else could lead to copper and lead in the oil sample,
- Are there any other indications of a problem?
The increased content of copper and lead in the oil, indeed, can be caused by wear of the bearing inside the engine, however, other sources of these elements are possible. So copper is used in plain bearings, various bushings, radiators, as well as in antiwear additives.
